Evans Memorial Lecture
In Association with the British Museum Dept. of Middle East
Photographing Jordan for three decades, both from the air and at ground level, Jane Taylor has documented several of the dramatic changes that have taken place in the country.
Many archaeological sites have been transformed from heaps of rubble into comprehensible (and often magnificent) monuments; others have been crowded around with modern industrial or residential development.
At the same time, with an eye to the future, there has been some meticulous conservation of buildings, wall paintings and other elements of the rich heritage of this beautiful but vulnerable corner of the earth.
This talk will look at some of these transformations, during a period of unprecedented challenges, including finding water resources for a rapidly increasing population, and the successive waves of refugees for whom this small country has provided sanctuary.
