SUMMARY:April 2021 Webinar: A window on Jordan’s heritage: untold stories from the ACOR (American Center of Research) Photo Archive
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another of our “In Conversation” series of educational webinars prepared by Jack Green\, Associate Director at ACOR and Jessica Holland\, Archival Projects Consultant at ACOR. \nThey say that every picture tells a story. If that’s the case\, there are thousands of stories waiting to be told and retold from these photographic archives. This lecture will show examples of the value and potential role these archives in Jordan have for different kinds of educational use and research and the general importance of online image archives given the plight of cultural heritage. The ACOR Photo Archive at the American Center of Research\, Jordan\, is an open-access database containing over 30\,000 images from the collections of Jane Taylor\, Rami Khouri\, Kenneth Russell\, Nancy Lapp\, former directors of ACOR\, among others. With images from across the Middle East\, Jordan is at the core of the collection\, capturing important images of archaeological sites and landscapes such as Petra and Jerash over time\, architecture and urban growth\, nature and ecology\, people and events\, as well as changing ways of life between the 1940s up to the early 2000s. \nHere we will see just how much society and places have changed\, and how photographic archives can serve as important points in preserving memories and communicating knowledge from the recent past into the present. \nTo find out more about the ACOR Photo Archive and to read the blogs: https://photoarchive.acorjordan.org/\nTo search for images: https://acor.digitalrelab.com/\nThe ACOR Photo Archive Project (2016-2020) and the ACOR Digital Archive Project (2020-2024) are both funded through grants from the United States Department of Education (Title VI).

SUMMARY:January 2021 Webinar: The archaeology of olive oil: British Museum excavations of a 4\,500-year-old olive factory in the Wadi ar-Rayyan in Jordan.
DESCRIPTION:The archaeology of olive oil: British Museum excavations of a 4\,500-year-old olive factory in the Wadi ar-Rayyan in Jordan. \nJordan was one of the first places in the world to domesticate the olive\, and olive oil would play a key role in the development of civilizations that followed. But what does the archaeology of olive oil production look like? In this talk\, Dr Jamie Fraser discusses excavations of an ancient olive oil factory at Khirbet Ghozlan in the Wadi Rayyan in north Jordan\, c.2500 BCE. This small\, rural site is important because it dates to a period of urban collapse\, during which the region’s earliest cities were abandoned. By investigating olive oil production at Khirbet Ghozlan\, we understand the resilience of Jordan’s ancient olive oil industry in times of recession\, and its role as a springboard on which Bronze Age cities would eventually recover in the 2nd millennium BCE. \nDr Jamie Fraser is Curator for the Ancient Levant and Anatolia at the British Museum. He has worked on archaeological projects in Jordan\, Syria\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Uzbekistan\, Kashmir\, Greece\, Cambodia\, and the Solomon Islands. His book Dolmens in the Levant about Bronze Age tomb monuments was awarded the G. Ernest Wright Award in 2018. Jamie currently directs the Khirbet Ghozlan Excavation Project in the Wadi ar-Rayyan. \nFREE registration. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pictures painted by the sun: photographing Jordan 1985-2015 - A talk by Jane Taylor\, a member of the Anglo Jordanian Society
DESCRIPTION:Free lecture series.\nEvans Memorial Lecture\nIn Association with the British Museum Dept. of Middle East \nPhotographing Jordan for three decades\, both from the air and at ground level\, Jane Taylor has documented several of the dramatic changes that have taken place in the country. \nMany archaeological sites have been transformed from heaps of rubble into comprehensible (and often magnificent) monuments; others have been crowded around with modern industrial or residential development. \nAt the same time\, with an eye to the future\, there has been some meticulous conservation of buildings\, wall paintings and other elements of the rich heritage of this beautiful but vulnerable corner of the earth. \nThis talk will look at some of these transformations\, during a period of unprecedented challenges\, including finding water resources for a rapidly increasing population\, and the successive waves of refugees for whom this small country has provided sanctuary. \nBook your free ticket through The British Museum box office on +44 (0)20 7323 8181 or online at www.britishmuseum.org.
