If you’re planning to see Mary Magdalene (the biblical biopic starring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix) when it is released this weekend, please do take a moment to look at the costumes.

On cinema-sized, HD screens, the exclusive embroideries commissioned by British costume designer Jacqueline Durran will be clear for all to see - and are all the more special thanks to the story behind them.

Durran asked artists from SEP Jordan, an organisation which employs female Palestinian and Syrian refugees and trains them in traditional crafts techniques, to produce works for the film, the end results of which can be seen on everything from small trims on tunics, to large, fully decorated shawls.
